‘We Are Closely Monitoring Political Developments In Nigeria’ – UK Government

Following the dramatic blockade of National Assembly entrance by armed operatives of the State Security Services, SSS, also known as DSS, the British Government has said that it is keeping a tab on the political developments in Nigeria.

This reality was made known in a statement released by the British government from its High Commission in Abuja on Tuesday, August 7, 2018.

Some People Democratic Party, PDP, lawmakers were prevented from gaining access to the National Assembly at around 7 Am in the morning on Tuesday.

The operatives stated that they were acting according to the order given to them.

The UK Government, however, stated that it was aware of media reports of “the situation at the National Assembly this morning.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and other political developments in Nigeria,” the statement said.

“The United Kingdom supports a process whereby the people of Nigeria can exercise their democratic rights to vote and be voted for.”

It declared its “unwavering support for a free, fair, credible and peaceful process and the independence of institutions, which allow for that”.

Political leaders have condemned the incident,

Following the blockade of the National Assembly, Tuesday, Acting President Yemi Osinbajo fired the director general of the SSS, Lawal Musa Daura. He was arrested by policemen in the Federal anti-robbery squad soon after and the blockade on the National Assembly was lifted.
